"What To Do?"

And so here I sit,
Surveying a foreign, alien land,
A life of which I am not the cause,
In a land I did not choose to live,
In a home I did not construct.  

Writing in a language I did not invent,
Spelling words that are given to me whole,
Using a syntax I did not create,
With a pen made somewhere in the distant East,
and paper from trees and mills unknown.  

I inhabit a life I did not intend,
Eating food I did not grow,
Drinking wine I did not press,
Reading words I did not write,
Watching films I did not make.  

All this material and substance,
given me without regret, without remorse,

NOTES:

The lesson here is a bit opaque, and requires one to have good knowledge of the story of the book of Exodus in the Old Testament.  But the point Paul is making is this: God does judge, and he picks who gets in, and who doesn't, when it came to getting to the Holy Land.  Not even Moses himself made it in!   

Hence, going to heaven is not, in any way, automatic for a believer in Christ.  The main idea is that your words and actions will--in fact--be judged by God, and if they do not show evidence of righteousness, then you should hold your salvation in doubt.  

Back in the early centuries of Christianity, it was taught clearly that you should NEVER, EVER assume that you are going to heaven, no matter what.  It was well understood that your salvation was God's decision, and it was going to be based on your whole life, not on just your core beliefs.  

Hence, Paul is warning us to make sure we live in accordance with the message of the Gospel, lest we ourselves should be disqualified from ultimate salvation.

When Paul uses the term "works" by itself, he is almost always referring to Jewish legal rituals and traditions. 

When Paul uses the phrase "good works", he means exactly what it sounds like, we are to do good deeds as a Christian.  It is very much apart of our sanctification and salvation.

LOCATION - Jesuit retreat house in Naples, Italy

He had just stretched his feet out toward the fire and was wondering idly if the next Pope's election would be signaled with a sign that said "White Smoke" when, as his eyes adjusted to the dark, he realized that Sandoz was standing near the wall mullioned windows, looking down at the shoreline far below, its rocks glimmering in the moonlight, waves lacing the beach. 

"I thought you'd be asleep by now," John said quietly.  "Rough trip, huh?"

Sandoz didn't reply.  He began to pace, restless despite the obvious fatigue, sat down briefly in a chair far from Candotti, and then stood again. Close, John thought.  He's very close.  

But when Sandoz spoke, it wasn't what John hoped for or expected--a cleansing breakdown, a confession that could make way for the man to forgive himself, the pouring out of a story with a plea for understanding.  Some sort of emotional release.  

"Do you experience God?" Sandoz asked him without preamble.  

Odd how uncomfortable the question made him.  The Society of Jesus rerely attracted mystics, who generally gravitated to the Carmelites or the Trappists, or wound up among the charismatics.  Jesuits tended to be men who found God in their work, whether that work was scholarly or more practical social service.  Whatever their calling, they devoted themselves to it and did so in the ame of God.  "Not directly.  Not as a friend or personality, I suppose."  John examined himself.  "Not, I think, even 'in a tiny whispering sound."  He watched the flames for a while.  "I would have to say that I find God in serving His children. 'For I was hungery and you fed me, I was thirsty and you gave me to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me, sick and you cared for me, imprisoned and you came to me.'"

The words lingered in the air as the fire popped and hissed softly.  Sandoz had stopped pacing and stood motionless in a far corner of the room, his face in shadows, firelight glittering on the metallic exoskeletons of this hands.  "Don't hope for more than that, John," he said. "God will break your heart." And then he left.  

After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea,
in the time of King Herod,
wise men from the East came to Jerusalem  saying,
“Where is the one who is born king of the Jews?
For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.”  

When King Herod heard this he was alarmed, and all Jerusalem with him.
After assembling all the chief priests and experts in the law,
he asked them where the Christ was to be born.  
“In Bethlehem of Judea,” they said, “for it is written this way by the prophet:

‘And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,

are in no way least among the rulers of Judah,

for out of you will come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.’”

Then Herod privately summoned the wise men
and determined from them when the star had appeared.  
He sent them to Bethlehem and said,
“Go and look carefully for the child.
When you find him, inform me so that I can go and worship him as well.”  

After listening to the king they left,
and once again the star they saw when it rose led them
until it stopped above the place where the child was.
When they saw the star they shouted joyfully.

As they came into the house and saw the child with Mary his mother,
they bowed down and worshiped him.

They opened their treasure boxes
and gave him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.
After being warned in a dream not to return to Herod,
they went back by another route to their own country.

After they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said,
“Get up, take the child and his mother and flee to Egypt, and stay there until I tell you,
for Herod is going to look for the child to kill him.”
Then he got up, took the child and his mother during the night, and went to Egypt.
He stayed there until Herod died.
In this way what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet was fulfilled:
“I called my Son out of Egypt.”

When Herod saw that he had been tricked by the wise men, he became enraged.
He sent men to kill all the children in Bethlehem
and throughout the surrounding region from the age of two and under,
according to the time he had learned from the wise men.
Then what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled:

18 “A voice was heard in Ramah,

weeping and loud wailing,

Rachel weeping for her children,

and she did not want to be comforted, because they were gone.”

After Herod had died, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt saying,
“Get up, take the child and his mother,
and go to the land of Israel,
for those who were seeking the child’s life are dead.”
So he got up and took the child and his mother and returned to the land of Israel.

But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning over Judea
in place of his father Herod,
he was afraid to go there. 

After being warned in a dream, he went to the regions of Galilee.
He came to a town called Nazareth and lived there.
Then what had been spoken by the prophets was fulfilled,
that Jesus would be called a Nazarene.

Commentary:

First, let's find out a little about Herod's son Archelaus, via a quick A.I. summary:

"Herod Archelaus was the son of Herod the Great and his wife Malthace, a Samaritan woman. Following his father's death in 4 BC, Archelaus was appointed ethnarch (ruler of the people) over Judea, Samaria, and Idumea, rather than king, as confirmed by Roman Emperor Augustus. 

"His reign was marked by harsh and tyrannical governance, including the brutal suppression of a Passover uprising that resulted in thousands of deaths.  Due to widespread complaints about his cruelty and mismanagement, Archelaus was deposed by Augustus in AD 6 and exiled to Vienne in Gaul, after which Judea came under direct Roman administration. 

"In the biblical narrative, Archelaus is significant because his rule caused Joseph to fear returning to Judea with the infant Jesus after their time in Egypt.

"Instead, Joseph was warned in a dream to settle in Galilee, specifically in Nazareth, fulfilling prophecy (Matthew 2:22-23)."

 Though this is A.I. it does correlate with the history of Herod that I've learned from old fashioned history books.  Hence, it seems Joseph did the right thing by avoiding the part of Judea that was under his rule.   

As for Jospeh's dreams, that had long been held as a valid means of receiving revelation in the mid-east until the current day.  So why did God use dreams instead of a messenger angel?  Unknown, the text does not tell us.  But we can assume that these instructions were short and to the point, and a dream was more than a good enough way to communicate these instructions.  

Of course those of us living in the 21st century would like these things to be more "verifiable" scientifically speaking, but God is obviously not interested in satisfying the curiosity of the scientifically minded individual.  If you don't wish to believe these narrative details, you are free to doubt them.  

However, the mention of the historically accurate names of Herod and Archelaus, along with their titles and time of rule, show conclusively that the writers of the gospels were doing their best to show that the story of Jesus is rooted in actual history, with real life villians, culture, and locations.  They were not trying to write a fairy-tale, but a real life account of the man/God that they knew, as he entered real history.   We obviously cannot independently verify every single word and event in the Gospels, but the writers of these narratives give us more than enough information for us to easily believe they were writing about an actual person in time, and not a figment of their imaginations.   

Yet the main thing about the virgin birth narrative and the dream instructions is to show that God was ultimately in charge of this project, and Joseph and Mary were his servants in this endeavor.  They were extremely important servants, but servants none-the-less.  But they were not picked to serve men, but God himself.  And it's very obvious that God was taking a very peculiar interest in the birth and welfare of this Son of Man.

The main take-away for those of us in the modern age to pay attention to is the fact that Jesus was set apart by God as an infant, and his life was God's number one priority.   After all, Jesus is the means of salvation for the whole world.

When Joseph awoke from sleep he did what the angel of the Lord told him.
He took his wife, but did not have marital relations with her
until she gave birth to a son, whom he named Jesus.

Commentary:

Even though Jesus was born through the Holy Spirit, and not via his father Joseph, we are given what appears to be Joseph's human genealogy.  It's a very simple, direct way to show Jesus' connection to various OT characters, and especially King David himself.  

Much like ourselves, Jesus was both a product of "the earth" in that he was a human being born of a woman, like all of us, but unlike us, the cause of his birth was the Holy Spirit.  Hence, he was born of a virgin who had never had sex with a man up to that point.   

For no one is declared righteous before him by the works of the law,
for through the law comes the knowledge of sin.

But now apart from the law the righteousness of God
(although it is attested by the law and the prophets)
has been disclosed—
namely, the righteousness of God through the faithfulness of Jesus Christ for all who believe. 

For there is no distinction,  
for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.
But they are justified freely by his grace
through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.

God publicly displayed him at his death as the mercy seat accessible through faith.
This was to demonstrate his righteousness
because God in his forbearance had passed over the sins previously committed.
This was also to demonstrate his righteousness in the present time,
so that he would be just and the justifier of the one who lives because of Jesus’ faithfulness.

I guess on Saturday (June 14, 2025) there was a nationwide demonstration (by the Democrats, of course) called "No Kings Day".  

Now, there has never been a king at anytime during the history of the United States.  The closest we ever came to having one was a Democrat by the name of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, a.k.a. "FDR".   He died in office, much like a king, after serving for nearly 16 years.   

Anyway, as is often the case with Democrats, they like to protest things that have no real existence.  Since we haven't had anything like a king govern the USA since before the Revolution, protesting kingship is a rather worthless activity.  

But you know who really hates the idea of kings?  God.  He told the Jews that kings were a really, really bad idea, and they should NEVER have one...but of course, they didn't listen.   

Want proof?  Here's a conversation that God had with the prophet Samuel:

1 SAMUEL 8 - The New Living Translation

As Samuel grew old, he appointed his sons to be judges over Israel.  Joel and Abijah, his oldest sons, held court in Beersheba.  But they were not like their father, for they were greedy for money. They accepted bribes and perverted justice.

Finally, all the elders of Israel met at Ramah to discuss the matter with Samuel.  “Look,” they told him, “you are now old, and your sons are not like you. Give us a king to judge us like all the other nations have.”

Samuel was displeased with their request and went to the Lord for guidance.  “Do everything they say to you,” the Lord replied, “for they are rejecting me, not you. They don’t want me to be their king any longer.  Ever since I brought them from Egypt they have continually abandoned me and followed other gods. And now they are giving you the same treatment.  Do as they ask, but solemnly warn them about the way a king will reign over them.”

Samuel Warns against a Kingdom

So Samuel passed on the Lord’s warning to the people who were asking him for a king.  “This is how a king will reign over you,” Samuel said. “The king will draft your sons and assign them to his chariots and his charioteers, making them run before his chariots.  Some will be generals and captains in his army, some will be forced to plow in his fields and harvest his crops, and some will make his weapons and chariot equipment.  The king will take your daughters from you and force them to cook and bake and make perfumes for him.  He will take away the best of your fields and vineyards and olive groves and give them to his own officials.  He will take a tenth of your grain and your grape harvest and distribute it among his officers and attendants.  He will take your male and female slaves and demand the finest of your cattle and donkeys for his own use.  He will demand a tenth of your flocks, and you will be his slaves.  When that day comes, you will beg for relief from this king you are demanding, but then the Lord will not help you.”

But the people refused to listen to Samuel’s warning. “Even so, we still want a king,” they said.  “We want to be like the nations around us. Our king will judge us and lead us into battle.”

So Samuel repeated to the Lord what the people had said,  and the Lord replied, “Do as they say, and give them a king.” Then Samuel agreed and sent the people home.

FYI: The land that the Philistines of biblical history occupied, is almost exactly the same as that of today's Gaza strip.  

1 Samuel 7:5-15 New Living Translation:

Then Samuel said to all the people of Israel, “If you want to return to the Lord with all your hearts, get rid of your foreign gods and your images of Ashtoreth. Turn your hearts to the Lord and obey him alone; then he will rescue you from the Philistines.”  So the Israelites got rid of their images of Baal and Ashtoreth and worshiped only the Lord.

Then Samuel told them, “Gather all of Israel to Mizpah, and I will pray to the Lord for you.”  So they gathered at Mizpah and, in a great ceremony, drew water from a well and poured it out before the Lord. They also went without food all day and confessed that they had sinned against the Lord. (It was at Mizpah that Samuel became Israel’s judge.)

When the Philistine rulers heard that Israel had gathered at Mizpah, they mobilized their army and advanced. The Israelites were badly frightened when they learned that the Philistines were approaching.  “Don’t stop pleading with the Lord our God to save us from the Philistines!” they begged Samuel.  So Samuel took a young lamb and offered it to the Lord as a whole burnt offering. He pleaded with the Lord to help Israel, and the Lord answered him.

Just as Samuel was sacrificing the burnt offering, the Philistines arrived to attack Israel. But the Lord spoke with a mighty voice of thunder from heaven that day, and the Philistines were thrown into such confusion that the Israelites defeated them.  The men of Israel chased them from Mizpah to a place below Beth-car, slaughtering them all along the way.

Samuel then took a large stone and placed it between the towns of Mizpah and Jeshanah. He named it Ebenezer (which means “the stone of help”), for he said, “Up to this point the Lord has helped us!”

So the Philistines were subdued and didn’t invade Israel again for some time. And throughout Samuel’s lifetime, the Lord’s powerful hand was raised against the Philistines.  The Israelite villages near Ekron and Gath that the Philistines had captured were restored to Israel, along with the rest of the territory that the Philistines had taken. And there was peace between Israel and the Amorites in those days.

The song "Edelweiss" was written by two Jewish guys in New York City for the musical "Sound of Music."  They knew the flower was important to Austrian culture, but the song itself was an American creation, not Austrian.   Hence, it's not sung in Austria.

So it was very surprising to see two very talented Austrian girls singing a beautiful duet of Edelweiss!    They do a huge number of great American songs on their channel.

For those who prefer something more traditional, you can listen to the original UKRANIAN version of the song, which has absolutely nothing to do with Christmas!  But it’s a beautiful song none-the-less:

On a personal note, of all the versions of Carol of the Bells I've heard in my life, this one by George Winston from his well loved "December" album is the one I've listened to most often.   I remember buying this album when it came out (on vinyl!) and loving it immediately.  It's still surprisingly popular some 42 years later.

Father Dan Reehil sits down with Mark McLean and they have a very honest, and straight forward conversation about spiritual warfare and the end-times.   

As Fr. Reehil correctly points out, the end-times does not mean the end of the world itself, but it certainly means the end of the world as we know it, and that's a good thing.  

As for the church and Christians, the coming end-times will mean intense persecution of Christians, even unto death.  The Catholic church does not believe in a "pre-tribulation rapture", rather they teach that the events in the book of Daniel and Revelation will be used to purify the church as is.   More importantly, they firmly believe that after the events of the antichrist, and his defeat, the world will be a far, far better place than it is now.   

This is a conversation that is well worth listening to.
